Mira rates cosmetics from what is actually in them. Each ingredient on the INCI list is assessed for its potential impact on health and the environment — whether it acts as an allergen, an irritant, an endocrine disruptor, a carcinogen or a pollutant. The most risky ingredient sets the band, and any other risky ingredients can lower it further.

Organic certification usually rules out the most problematic ingredients in advance. That is why organic cosmetics tend to land in the higher bands — 'Excellent' or 'Good' — not because of the label itself, but simply because those ingredients are not in the formula. And if a certified product does contain a risky ingredient, the rating will reflect it all the same.
