Why does cheese often get a low rating?

Cheese is naturally high in saturated fat and sodium — two things that pull a product's rating down.

Mira assesses nutritional quality using Nutri-Score principles, adapted to the product type. Cheese falls into its own category, where a high level of saturated fat and salt is judged strictly. That is why most cheeses land in the lower bands — 'Poor' or 'Bad' — even when there are no risky additives in the composition.

This doesn't mean cheese has to be cut from your diet. The point of the rating is to help you adjust how much and how often you eat it, not to forbid the product.

One thing worth knowing: Mira's rating does not take into account how the cheese was made (artisanal or industrial), nor any labels or certifications it may carry. The rating is based only on composition and nutritional values.

The rating is Mira's opinion. The words 'Excellent', 'Good', 'Poor' and 'Bad' refer to the rating, not to the product itself.
